Myofascial Techniques
Level 1

Day and a Half

Please enquire to express interest

This course explores the relationship between pain, postural overload and the adaptation of soft tissues. You will learn specific palpation skills and become adept at identifying key bony landmarks. Soft tissue techniques that reduce pain and increase range of motion will be covered.

This program is ideal for newly graduated physiotherapists, massage therapists and allied health professionals who want to expand their skills in the area of myofascial therapy.

This course will assist you in gaining proficiency with:

  • Promoting recovery from muscle sprains and strains
  • Optimising sports performance through improving body alignment and biomechanics
  • Preventing recurrent injuries
  • Improving muscle imbalances and postural alignment
  • Assisting in the rehabilitation of common aches and pains

Many popular exercise programs contribute to postural and muscle imbalances by strengthening already tight muscles and stretching muscles that are weak and over lengthened.

An appropriately designed training program can prevent some of these muscle imbalances from occurring. However, exercise alone is usually not sufficient to correct many of these muscle imbalances.

The use of manual soft tissue techniques is helpful for reducing tightness and pain in soft tissues and promoting pain free movement. Have the opportunity to refine your manual skills with:

  • Myofascial techniques,
  • Trigger point techniques
  • Deep soft tissue massage techniques

Myofascial Techniques
Level 2

2 day workshop

Be inspired with new techniques and new ways of assessing and treating your clients. In Level 2 we will cover a much wider range of soft tissue techniques. How a client is moving, rather than only looking at static posture, will be considered.

This course will build on the knowledge you have gained in Myofascial Techniques Level 1. Techniques we covered included working with tight muscles, loosening scar adhesions, and working on trigger points. In level 1 our goals were to increase muscle and joint flexibility, restore the ideal range of motion, and address postural imbalances.

The level 2 program will cover various dynamic assessments to identify lines of myofascial tightness and neural tension throughout the body. An understanding of the continuous nature of the myofascial system and it’s contribution to pain and injury will be gained.

A wide variety of myofascial and neural release techniques with specific positional variations will also be covered.

Knowing why there may be tension in various lines of fascia, or in various neural structures, will allow you to be more specific when you use soft tissue techniques; it will also improve your exercise programming and ability to prevent injuries.

Stability of
the hip

2 day workshop

Please enquire to express interest

This course will review the mechanisms for optimal stability of the hip and pelvis. The normal functional anatomy of the muscles contributing to the ideal stability of the hip will be explored, along with an overview of the research on altered activation patterns in common pathologies. We will review the suggested approaches to exercise prescription from the research. We will also apply practical, clinical tips for creating a specific graded approach to exercise prescription.

This course will cover the current research on:

  • Optimal intra-pelvic stability – implications for hip function
  • Stability mechanisms around the hip joint
  • Functional roles of the muscles surrounding the hip, both normal function and common dysfunctional patterns in the presence of pain and pathology – current research on pain and unloading.
  • Implications for assessment and exercise prescription – principals from the research
  • Practical  – Exercise options – specific, graded, progressive.
  • Real Time Ultasound – Cuing for correct recruitment patterns.
  • Graded exercise progressions

Short Courses

These accelerated programs are designed to up-skill your exercise prescription expertise.

Each program is 3 hours and allows you to get up to date with anatomy reviews and the latest research on exercise programming. You can select particular individual sessions that are of interest to you or enroll in a workshop series.

Workshops are arranged based on demand, get in contact to express interest.

Neck, Shoulder and elbow

This course covers specific anatomy and exercise prescription with emphasis on exercises that could potentially aggravate neck and shoulder problems if performed incorrectly. You will learn what to look out for and how to correct a client’s techniques in the case of upper neck, elbow or arm pain.

Postural types, common problems and appropriate exercise prescription

You’ll review the most common postural types and identify the key features of each. Basic muscle tests will be reviewed to assess which muscles may be tight and need stretching vs which muscles require stability work or strengthening. Specific exercises for hyper and hypomobility will also be covered.

Hip/lumbar spine stability

This workshop covers an anatomy review of the lumbar spine and hip. It includes specific exercise prescription for the stability of these regions. These basic principles are essential before progressing to more complex exercise.

This program uses Real Time Ultrasound practice to test if you are teaching these stability exercises correctly.
